How to Perform Salah?

بسم اللہ الرحمٰن الرحیم

الحمدللہ وحدہ، والصلاۃ والسلام
علی من لا نبی بعدہ، اما بعد

OBLIGATION OF SALAH:

Offering Salah (prayers) five times a day (24 hours), is an
Obligatory Service, imposed on every adult, sane Muslim, male, female, or
effeminate, except the women who are suffering menstrual bleeding or
post-partum bleeding. This is agreed upon among all the Muslim scholars.

Allah Almighty says:

Establish prayers
at the going down of the sun until the dark of night, and (the recital of) the
Qur’an at dawn. Lo! (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn is ever witnessed.”
[17:78]

Talha bin ‘Ubaidullah (رضی اللہ عنہ) reported that a man
from Najd with unkempt hair came to Allah’s Messenger (
) and
we heard his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying, till he
came near and then we came to know that he was asking about Islam. Allah’s
Messenger (
)
said, “You have to offer prayers perfectly five times in a day and night
(24 hours).” The man asked, “Is there any more (praying)?”
Allah’s Messenger (
)
replied, “No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil prayers (you
can).” Allah’s Messenger (
) further said to him: “You have to observe
fasts during the month of Ramadan.” The man asked, “Is there any more
fasting?” Allah’s Messenger (
) replied, “No, but if you want to
observe the Nawafil fasts (you can.)” Then Allah’s Messenger (
)
further said to him, “You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory
charity).” The man asked, “Is there anything other than the Zakat
for me to pay?” Allah’s Messenger (
) replied, “No unless you want to
give alms of your own.” And then that man retreated saying, “By
Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this.” Allah’s Messenger (
)
said, “If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will
be granted Paradise).” [Sahih Bukhari: H.46]

Aisha
(
رضی اللہ عنہا)
reported that Fatima bint Abi Hubaish asked the Prophet, “I got persistent
bleeding (in between the periods) and do not become clean. Shall I give up
prayers?” He replied, “No, this is from a blood vessel. Give up the
prayers only for the days on which you usually get the menses and then take a
bath and offer your prayers.” [Sahih Bukhari:H.325]

A
woman asked `Aisha, “Should I offer the prayers that which I did not offer
because of menses” `Aisha said, “Are you from the Huraura’ (a town in
Iraq?) We were with the Prophet (
) and used to get our
periods but he never ordered us to offer them (the Prayers missed during
menses).” `Aisha perhaps said, “We did not offer them.” [Sahih
Bukhari:H.321]

ONE WHO ABANDONS SALAH DELIBERATELY:

The
one who abandons the prayer has two possible states: either he believes in its
legislation, or he denies its legislation. So regarding this second state, he
is a disbeliever by the consensus of the Muslims. A person who believes in the
legislation but abandons Salah of a single time, deliberately, for his laziness, without a legal excuse, he should
be advised to offer Salah, if  he refuses
to offer, his case should be elevated to the governor or his subordinate, who
is officially appointed for prosecution. The public prosecutor would advise the
accused person to offer Salah till the end of time for the next prayers, otherwise, he will be executed; if the accused offers, it is well, but if he refuses still
then he is no longer a Muslim, but an apostate. Now he is given three days to
repent, well if he repents, otherwise, after passing the deadline, he would be
executed by the official court. It is notable that a person would not be
considered a disbeliever or an apostate for abandoning Salah, even for a number
of prayers, until he refuses to offer prayers before the public prosecutor or
the court. His repentance would be considered valid, only after reciting Shahadah
and offering Salah, Severe disease, insanity, and sleep are valid excuses for
abandoning Salah.

[Al-Insaf:
1/363-376, Ar-Raudh-ul-Murbi:p.61]

 SHUROOT/CONDITIONS
OF SALAH

The conditions for the Prayer are nine:

(1) Islam

(2) Sanity

(3) Adolescence

(4) Uplifting Ritual Impurity (i.e. Ablution)

(5) Removal of Filth

(6) Covering the ‘Awrah/Private Parts

(7) The Entrance of the Proper Time

 (8) Facing the Qiblah

 (9) The Intention.

FIVE TIMES OF SALAH:

1. Fajr:

Fajr time begins from True Dawn i.e. horizontal light that appears
on the eastern horizon long before the sun rises. It should not be confused with
False

Dawn (Fox’s Tail) appears before True Dawn. Fajr time
ends when the upper

edge of the solar disc appears on the eastern horizon.

2. Dhuhr:

Dhur time begins when the whole solar disc has passed over the
Zenith. It happens roughly two minutes later than the Apparent Mid Day (When the center of the solar disc is exactly on the Zenith). It should

not be confused with Average/Computed Mid-Day (12:00 noon).

Dhur time ends when the shadow of an erected object (e.g tree)
equals

to its actual length, in addition to the shadow that was at the
time of

Zenith.

3. Asr:

Asr time begins when Dhur time ends. Recommended Asr
time ends when the

sun turns pale and one can look at it, while Asr time in
case of necessity, ends

when the upper edge of the sun disappears in the western horizon.

4. Maghrib:

Maghrib time begins with sunset and ends when Red Glow disappears
on the

western horizon.

5. Isha:

Isha time begins when Maghrib time ends, however, it
is recommended that

White Glow/Dusk/Twilight must be disappeared. Recommended Isha
time

ends when one-third of the night has passed, while Isha time in
case of necessity

persists till True Dawn. The night is considered from sunset to True
Dawn.

ARAKAN/PILLARS
OF SALAH

The pillars of the prayer are fourteen:

(1) QIYAM/Standing Upright, if one has the ability to do so

(2) TAKBEER TAHREEMAH/The opening Takbeer

(3) Reciting Surah Al-Faatihah

(4) RUKOO/Bowing

(5) QAUMAH/Rising from Bowing

(6) TWO SAJDAHS/Prostrating on all seven limbs

one praying
alone

(7) The first Tashahhud

(8) Sitting for the first Tashahhud

ARAKAN/PILLARS:

The pillars are that which if one fails to perform any of them out
of forgetfulness

or intentionally, his prayer is rendered invalid because of his
abandoning it.

WAJIBAT/The Essentials of Prayers:

The Essentials of Prayers are that if one fails to perform
any of them intentionally, his prayer is rendered invalid due to his abandoning
it, but if he leaves any of them due to forgetfulness, he is obligated to
perform the SAJDAH AS-SAHW

(prostrations for forgetfulness) at the end of the prayer. And
Allaah knows
best.

INVALIDATORS OF SALAH:

The following actions or practices invalidate SALAH:

1. Whatever invalidates WUDHU, invalidates SALAH.

2. Missing a RUKN/PILLAR of SALAH, either intentionally or
forgetfully.

3. Missing a WAJIB/ESSENTIAL intentionally.

4. Adding to SALAH intentionally, that is not its part, like an
additional

RAK’AH.

5. Eating an eatable.

6. Drinking any drink.

7. Speaking a word or phrase, even if it consists of only two
letters,

irrelevant to SALAH. Whistling is considered an invalidating
speech.

8. Performing an irrelevant action excessively without necessity,
like

walking or moving limbs, even for clapping.

OFFENSIVES IN SALAH:

The following are offensive actions in SALAH:

1. Missing an action or phrase recommended by Sunnah;

2. Looking right, left, or upward;

3. Collecting hair or garments;

4. Inserting fingers of one hand into fingers of the other hand to
make a network;

5. Putting a hand on lateral sides for support

6. Keeping a hand on the lateral side or back;

7. Wiping over forehead excessively;

8. Chewing anything like bubble gum;

9. Supporting with hand on ground whilst sitting, with back
against the wall or a

pole, etc without necessity;

10. Putting whole weight on one foot.

HOW TO PERFORM SALAH:

This is how an individual male or a male Imam (Leader of the
Congregational

Prayers) performs Salat-ul-Fajr.

SALAT AL-FAJR:

QIYAM/STANDING UPRIGHT:

Stand upright, facing Qiblah (Makkah Mukarramah, out of this
city), the toes of your feet
should face Qiblah too. The distance between your feet should be
equal to the

distance between your shoulders.

NIYYAH/INTENTION:

Fully concentrate on the Salah, making the intention of offering Salah
and

determining which Salah you are going to offer (e.g. Fajr or Dhuhr, etc). If you are

behind the Imam (The Leader of the Congregation), then prepare your mind
to follow

him. Spelling intention verbally is not required, however, if
somebody utters
words of intention for assuring concentration, that is
permissible.

TAKBEER TAHREEMAH/OPENING
TAKBEER

Say ALLAHU AKABAR (Allah is the Greatest) Whilst saying Takbeer Tahrima raise your hands up to your shoulders or the lobes of your ears, in a way, that your open
palms face Qiblah,
keeping fingers intact. While saying Takbeer Tahreemah, raise your both hands, simultaneously, straight, parallel, and pointed upward.

CLASPING HANDS:

Then put your right palm on the back of your left hand and place these
clasped hands, just beneath your navel.

GAZING AT THE PLACE OF SAJDAH:

From beginning to end, keep your gaze on the place of Sajdah,
throughout Salah.

ISTIFTAH/OPENING
PHRASE:

Then recite Istiftah/Opening

“SUBHANAK ALLAHUMMA WABI HAMDIKA WA TABARAKASMUKA WA TA’ALAA JADDUKA
WA LA ILAHA GHAYRUK”
(O’ Allah You are Flawless, all praise belongs to You,
Blessed is Your Name, Exalted is Your Glory and there is no God but You)  as loud as you can hear yourselves.

TA’AWUDH/SEEKING
REFUGE WITH ALLAH ALMIGHTY:

Seek refuge with Allah Almighty by reciting the following phrase:

 “A’UODHU BILLAHI MINASH
SHAYTAAN IRAJEEM”

“I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the stoned one.”

TASMIYAH/RECITING
BISMILLAH
:

Then recite this blessed verse, that is recited in the beginning
of all good deeds.

BISMILLAH-IR-RAHMAN-IR-RAHEEM

“In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious.”

SURAH AL-FATIHAH/THE
OPENING CHAPTER

Now recite Surah Al-Fatihah, with correct pronunciation,
caring for each stress

and delay. (Figure 5)

AL-HAMDU LILLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN. AR-RAHMAN-IR-RAHEEM. MAALIKI YAUM-ID-DEEN.
IYYAKA NA’ABUDU WA IYYAKA NSTAEEN,

IHDINA ASIRAT AL-MUSTAQEEM. SIRAT AL-LADHEEN AN-AMTA ALAYHIM. GHAYR-IL-MAGHDHOOBI
ALAYHIM WALA DHAA-AL-LEEN.

 “All Praise is due to
Allah, the Lord of the cosmos. The Most Merciful, the Most

Gracious. The Master of the Day of Judgment. We worship you
exclusively and we

seek only your help. Guide us to the straight path. The path of
those, whom you

granted. Neither path of the punished people nor the misguided.”

After completing Surah Al-Fatihah, say Aameen (O’
Lord! Accept it)

Then recite Tasmiyah and any Surah from the Holy Quran.
Surah Al-Ikhlas is given below.

QUL HUWALLAHU AHAD. ALLAH-US-SAMAD. LAM YALID WA LAM YOOLAD. WA LAM
YA KULLAHU KUFUWAN AHAD.

“ Say (O’ Messenger!) Allah is the Unique one. Allah is the
Eternal Refuge. He

neither begets nor is begotten. And none is there equivalent to
Him.”

RUKOO/BOWING POSTURE:

Now say ALLAHO-AKBAR and raise your hands as mentioned in the case of Takbeer

Tahreemah, then bow down gripping
your knees with respective hands, keeping

the back stretched and parallel to the ground, straighten the arms and
legs. (Figure 8)

In the posture of Rukoo say SUBHANA RABBI AL-AZEEM (Glory
be to My Lord, the Great.), three times.

QAUMAH/SHORT
STANDING POSTURE:

Then stand upright, whilst going straight, and raise your hands as
raised in the

beginning. Say SAMI-ALLAHU LIMAN HAMIDAH (Allah heard the
person who

praised Him.)

RABBANA LAK AL-HAMDU MIL-AS-SAMAAWAATI WA MIL-AL-ARDHI WA MIL’A MA
SHI’TA MIN SHAYIM BA’D

“O’ our Lord! Unto You belongs all the Praise, that fills the
heavens and the earth

and whatever You wills after that.”

FIRST SAJDAH/PROSTRATION POSTURE:

Now, say ALLAH-O-AKBAR and kneel down, supporting on your
toes, keeping your hands on the thighs. Put knees first on the ground, then
hands and forehead

(including nose) respectively. Make sure that you have placed your
hands on the

ground, near to the ears, facing palms downward, keeping fingers
of each hand

joined together and pointed towards Qiblah. Fix your toes
and knees on the

ground, leaving a suitable distance between the two feet and
likewise between

the two knees. Keep your elbows elevated from the ground and away
from your

ribs, and keep your belly away from the thighs. During Sajdah,
seven organs must

be in contact with the ground/Prayer Mat, i.e. forehead (including
nose), two

hands, two knees, and two feet.

During this posture, recite three times SUBHANA RABBI AL-A’ALA (Glory
be to My Lord, the Highest). (Figure 13)

JALSAH/SHORT
SITTING POSTURE:

Say ALLAH-O-AKBAR taking off the forehead and hands. Now
sit on the sole of the left hand, keeping both legs bent, and fixing your right toe on the ground,

facing the tips of your toes towards Qiblah. Put your right palm on the right thigh and left

palm on the left thigh, keeping the fingers of each hand joined
together and pointed

towards Qiblah. Recite three times RABBIGH-FIRLEE (O’ My
Lord! Forgive me please!).

SECOND SAJDAH/PROSTRATION POSTURE:

Now say ALLAH-O-AKBAR and perform the second Sajdah as
performed the first one.

Now first RAK’AH/CYCLE is complete, which comprises QIYAM, RUKOO,
and two SAJDAHs. Then saying ALLAH-O-AKBAR, stand upright for the second RAK’AH/CYCLE.

Whilst standing, support on your toes, taking off your forehead, hands, and knees respectively.

SECOND RAK’AH/CYCLE:

Now you are standing upright, as was in the case of the first RAK’AH,
clasping hands

below the navel. Don’t recite ISTIFTAH now, but recite TA’AWUDH,
TASMIYAH,

SURAH AL-FATIHAH, TASMIYAH,
and any Surah from the Holy Quran. Then

perform RUKOO and two SUJOOD as performed in the first
RAK’AH/CYCLE.

QA’ADAH/LONG
SITTING POSTURE:

After performing the second Sajdah of the second RAK’AH/CYCLE, sit
as you sat in

JALSAH/SHORT SITTING POSTURE in between the two SUJOOD.
The only

difference is the position of the right hand. Close your pink finger
and ring finger of

right hand inward, join tips of middle finger and thumb to form
the shape of a

ring, keep index finger straight and stretched, pointed towards Qiblah.
Now put

this pointing right hand on the right thigh. Keep pointing with
the index finger

during this posture, without moving it, except when you recite the name of Allah

Almighty, move it once upward swiftly and then turn it down,
keeping stretched

and pointed.

TASHAH-HUD:

Recite TASHAH-HUD in QA’ADAH/LONG SITTING POSTURE.

AT-TAHIYATU LILLAHI WAS-SALAWAATU WAT-TAYIBATU AS-SALAMU ALAIKA
AYU

HAN-NABIYU WA RAHMA-TULLAHI WA BARAKAATUH. AS-SALAAMU ALAYNA WA ALAA
IBAD-IL-LAH IS-SALIHEEN. ASH-HADU AL-LAA ILAAHA ILL-ALLAHU WA ASHHADU ANNA
MUHAMMADAN ABDUHU WA RASOOLUH.

 “Unto Allah belongs all
praises, the prayers, and all good deeds. O’ Messenger! Be upon you the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah. Peace be upon us and

Allah’s righteous servants. I bear witness that there is no God
but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger.”

AS-SALAT-UL-IBRAHEEMIYAH:

After reciting TASHAH-HUD recite AL-SALAT-UL-IBRAHEEMIYAH
which is

supplication for the Messenger Muhammad and his forefather
Messenger

Ibraheem/Abraham (May His blessings both of them).

ALLAHUMMA SALLI ALA MUHAMMAD, WA ALAA AALI MUHAMMAD, KAMA

SALLAYTA ALAA IBRAHEEM, WA ALAA AALI IBRAHEEM. INNAKA HAMIDUM MAJEED.
ALLAHUMMA BARIK ALAA MUHAMMAD, WA ALAA AALI MUHAMMAD, KAMA BARAKTA ALAA
IBRAHEEM, WA ALAA AALI IBRAHEEM. INNAKA HAMIDUM MAJEED.

O’ Allah! Shower blessings upon Muhammad and his Aal
(wives, Muslim kin, and pious Muslim followers) of Muhammad, as You showered
blessings upon

Ibraheem, and the Aal of Ibraheem. Verily, You are the One Who
deserves to be

praised and thanked, and the One Who is glorified. O’ Allah! We
ask You to bless

Muhammad, and the Aal of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibraheem and
the Aal of

Ibraheem. Verily, You are the One Who deserves to be praised and
thanked, and

the One Who is glorified.”

DUA/SUPPLICATION:

After reciting AL-SALAT-UL-IBRAHEEMIYAH, recite any of the DUAS/supplications, the Messenger of Allah (May Allah shower His blessings upon
him) used to recite in his SALAH while reciting the following DUA is recommended.

ALLAHUMMA INNI AUDHU BIKA MIN ADHAB-IL-QABRI, WA MIN ADHABI

JAHANNAM, WA MIN FITNAT-IL-MAHYA WAL MAMAT, WA MIN SHARRI
FITNATIL-MASEEH-ID-DAJJALI.

 “ O’ Allah! I seek Your
Refuge from torment in the grave and Fitnah (test) of

Maseeh Al-Dajjal (Anti Christ). I seek Your Refuge from the Fitnah of
life and Fitnah of death. I seek Your Refuge from sins and debt.”

SALAM/SALUTATION:

Turn your face right side saying ASSALAM-O-ALAYKUM WA RAHAMTULLAH,
then turn your face left side saying the same phrase.

Now your SALAT-UL-FAJR is complete.

SALAAT AL-DHUHR:

SALAT AL-DHUR consists of four
obligatory RAK’AT/CYCLES. Perform 1st and 2nd RAK’AH, as
performed in SALAT AL-FAJR. When you have performed

QA’ADAH/LONG SITTING POSTURE, recite TASHAHUD only and
stand up for third RAK’AH/CYCLE. Perform 3rd RAK’AH as performed 2nd
RAK’AH, but do not recite additional Surah, after SURAH AL-FATIHAH and perform RUKOO/BENDING
POSTURE and SUJOOD/PROSTRATION POSTURES. Then perform the 4th RAK’AH
as you performed the 3rd RAK’AH. After performing SUJOOD, perform a second QA’ADAH/LONG
SITTING POSTURE. Perform this posture as you did in SALAT AL-FAJR,
except for the way of sitting. Sit on your buttocks, keeping the toes of your right foot
fixed on the ground. Pass your left foot under the right leg. This specific way
of sitting is called TAWARRUK.

After reciting TASHAHUD, AL-SALAT-UL-IBRAHEEMIYAH,
and DUA, say SALAM as mentioned before.

SALAAT AL-ASR:

SALAT AL-ASR also consists of four
obligatory RAK’AT/CYCLES. Perform SALAT ALASR as you performed SALAT
AL-DHUHR.

SALAAT AL-MAGHRIB:

SALAT AL-MAGHRIB consists of three obligatory RAK’AT/CYCLES.
Perform these three RAK’AT as you performed the first three RAK’AT of
SALAT AL-DHUHR and SALAT AL-ASR. Then instead of standing for 4th
RAK’AH, perform QA’ADAH/LONG SITTING POSTURE and say SALAM as
performed in SALAT AL-DHUHR.

SALAAT AL-ISHA:

Perform SALAT AL-ISHA as you performed SALAT AL-DHUHR
and SALAT AL-ASR.

SALAAT AL-WITR:

At the end of SALAAT AL-ESHA, three RAK’AT/cycles of SALAAT
AL-WITR are highly recommended. Perform two RAK’AT/CYCLES as you
performed SALAAT AL-FAJR, afterwards, add one RAK’AH/CYCLE to
make a total of three. Recite DUA QUNOOT after standing upright from RUKOO
of third RAK’AH. Keep raising your hands up to your chest, whilst reciting DUA
QUNOOT.

ALLAHUMM-AHDINEE FEEMAN HADAYTA, WA AAFINEE FEEMAN AAFAYTA, WA TAWALLANI
FEEMAN TAWALLAYTA, WA BAARIK LEE FEEMA A’ATAYTA, WA QINEE SHARRA MA QADHAYTA,
FA INNAKA TAQDHEE WALA YQDHA ALYKA, WA INNAHU LA YADHILLU MAN WALAYTA, WALA
YAYEZZU MAN AADAYTA TABAARAKTA WA TA’ALAYTA LA MANJA’A MINKA ILLA ILAYKA.

SALAAT AL-JUMU’AH:

Perform SALAAT AL-JUMU’AH, as you performed SALAAT
AL-FAJR
.

ADHKAR/REPEATED
PHRASES:

After SALAM, say ALLAH-O-AKBAR once and ASTAGHFIRULLAH
thrice a bit loudly. Recite AYAT AL-KURSI once.

Recite SUBHAN ALLAH 33 times, AL-HAMDULILLAH 33
times, and ALLAH-O-AKBAR 34 times.

DUA AL-JAMA’AH/CONGREGATIONAL
SUPPLICATION:

It is permissible for Imam to supplicate for the congregation,
after offering

SALAH, while the MA’MOOMEEN/FOLLOWERS are recommended to
say Ameen, whilst Imam supplicates. Individual supplication is
permissible too. However,

WHEN YOU ARE BEHIND IMAM:

When you are offering SALAH behind an Imam, you will observe
following

differences:

1. Say TAKBEER when Imam is near to completing his TAKBEER.

2. Follow Imam in all his actions, going from one posture to
another posture

slightly later than the Imam.

3. Don’t say SAMI ALLAHU LIMAN HAMIDAH, but only say RABBANA
WALAK ALHAMD
, whilst standing upright after RUKOO.

4. If Imam is reciting Quran loudly, in QIYAM, then just listen to
it attentively,

and don’t recite verbally, however, you are allowed to recite in
heart/mind

secretly, without moving the tongue.

5. If you make any mistake, don’t worry, it is forgiven.

IF YOU ARE A FEMALE:

If you are a female, you should observe these differences:

1. You are not required to attend the JAMA’AH/Congregation to
offer SALAH, though it is permissible for you, provided that you have
not scented yourselves and you are fully covered in your Hijab.

2. Stand in the last row, behind the rows of men and children.

3. Keep your body composed and integrated throughout SALAH.

4. At home, you are required to cover your whole body, except, the
face and
hands. The head should be covered in such a way, that no hair may be
visible.

5. Keep your feet close to each other, without a large distance
between them.

6. Raise your hands up to your breasts.

7. In QIYAM, clasp your hands just beneath the breasts.

8. In RUKOO, don’t bow down fully, but just have a slight
bow. Keep your
elbows intact with your ribs.

9. In SAJDAH, don’t elevate your hips. Keep your whole body close
to the
ground. Spread your arms on the ground, keeping your elbows in
contact
with your ribs.

10. In JALSAH and QA’ADAH, sit on your buttocks, by
folding your legs

backward and putting them on the right side. Be as easy as it is
possible for
you.

11. After SALAM, don’t raise your voice to recite ADHKAR.

12. Don’t stay in the main compound of MASJID, along with strange men,
after
offering SALAH.
