talking to animals

Talking to animals sounds like an exciting idea, but is it possible? The Qur’an explicitly states that Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) was granted the ability to communicate with animals. This is mentioned in Surah An-Naml (The Ant), 27:16-17, where Allah describes the unique knowledge and power given to Sulayman (AS), including his understanding of the speech of birds:

Translation:

And Solomon inherited [the knowledge of] David, and he said, ‘O people, we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from all things. Indeed, this is a clear favor.’” (27:16)
“And gathered for Solomon were his soldiers from the jinn, men, and birds, and they were [marching] in rows.”
(27:17)

This passage shows that Prophet Sulayman (AS) was divinely granted the ability to understand and communicate with birds, a remarkable gift not possessed by ordinary humans.

Another significant instance of his interaction with animals occurs in the story of the Hoopoe bird (Hudhud) in Surah An-Naml 27:20-28, where the bird reports to Sulayman (AS) about the people of Sheba (Saba), their queen, and their sun-worshipping practices. Sulayman (AS) acknowledges the bird’s intelligence and sends a letter to invite the Queen of Sheba to Islam.

Additionally, Surah An-Naml 27:18-19 mentions Prophet Sulayman (AS) understanding the speech of ants when they warned each other to take cover from his approaching army:

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ وَادِ ٱلنَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌۭ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّمْلُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ مَسَـٰكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَـٰنُ وَجُنُودُهُۥ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ١٨

Translation:

Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, ‘O ants, enter your dwellings so that Solomon and his soldiers do not crush you while they are unaware.’” (27:18)

This shows that Sulayman (AS) could understand not only birds but also the speech of insects.

The Qur’an clearly states that Prophet Sulayman (AS) was blessed with the extraordinary ability to communicate with animals, particularly birds and ants. This miraculous gift was a sign of Allah’s favor upon him and reflects the vast knowledge and power given to certain prophets for fulfilling their divine missions.

The Qur’an’s Prediction of Human-Animal Communication: Dābbat al-Arḍ

The Qur’an suggests that a time will come when humans will witness communication with animals, particularly through the prophecy of Dābbat al-Arḍ (The Beast of the Earth). This event is mentioned in Surah An-Naml (27:82):

وَإِذَا وَقَعَ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَخْرَجْنَا لَهُمْ دَآبَّةًۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ تُكَلِّمُهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا لَا يُوقِنُونَ ٨٢

Translation:

“And when the Word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a beast from the earth who will speak to them because the people did not believe in Our signs.” (27:82)

1. Understanding Dābbat al-Arḍ and Its Role in Communication

  • The verse indicates that a beast (Dābbah) will communicate with humans.
  • The term “تُكَلِّمُهُمْ” (tukallimuhum) means “it will speak to them,” implying an advanced form of interaction, possibly verbal communication.
  • This event is often interpreted as a sign of the Last Day (Qiyāmah), but it also reflects the idea that human-animal communication will become a reality.

2. Linking AI and the Qur’anic Prophecy

In light of recent developments in AI-based animal communication, some scholars and thinkers have speculated that:

  • The emergence of AI models capable of understanding and interpreting animal speech could be a precursor to this prophecy.
  • AI could one day allow humans to “talk” with animals in a way never before possible.
  • The Qur’an predicted that a non-human entity (Dābbah) would be able to converse with people—similar to how modern AI enables interaction with non-human creatures.

3. The Broader Qur’anic Theme of Animal Communication

The Qur’an already presents examples of human-animal communication, particularly in the story of Prophet Sulayman (AS):

  • Understanding the speech of birds (27:16).
  • Comprehending the conversation of ants (27:18-19).

This suggests that divine knowledge allowed some prophets to communicate with animals, and AI could be a means through which humans gradually unlock this ability.

4. A Step Toward Qur’anic Fulfillment?

While the exact nature of Dābbat al-Arḍ remains mysterious, the concept of a non-human entity speaking to people aligns with ongoing advancements in AI. Whether through scientific progress or divine intervention, the Qur’anic idea of humans talking to animals is becoming increasingly plausible.

AI and Animal Communication: Bridging the Gap Between Humans and Animals

With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), scientists are making significant efforts to develop AI models that can understand animal sounds, interpret their meanings, and even enable humans to communicate with animals. This emerging field, often referred to as “digital bioacoustics” or “interspecies communication,” leverages machine learning, deep learning, and large datasets of animal vocalizations to decode animal languages.

AI is being trained to recognize and interpret patterns in animal vocalizations. Unlike human languages, animal communication is often based on instinctive sounds, body movements, and environmental cues. AI models analyze these elements to identify correlations and possible meanings.

a. Key AI Projects on Animal Communication:

  1. The Earth Species Project (ESP) – A non-profit initiative to develop AI-driven translation models to decode animal languages, inspired by natural language processing (NLP) used in human communication.
  2. DeepSqueak – An AI program that detects and interprets ultrasonic vocalizations of rodents, helping researchers understand their emotional states.
  3. Whale and Dolphin Communication (CETI Project) – A project using AI to analyze sperm whale clicks (codas) and uncover potential grammar-like structures.
  4. Birdsong AI Models – AI tools have successfully classified different bird calls and even detected stress signals in bird sounds.

b. AI Models Enabling Human-Animal Communication

While true human-animal conversation remains a long-term goal, AI is already helping bridge communication gaps by:

  • Translating Animal Sounds into Human-Readable Signals: AI can detect distress, mating calls, and warning signals in animal vocalizations, helping conservationists and farmers respond appropriately.
  • Developing AI Chatbots for Animals: Some experiments involve AI-powered robotic interfaces that mimic specific animal calls to interact with them in their own “language.”
  • Training AI to Generate Animal-Like Sounds: Researchers are using AI to synthesize animal calls to influence behavior, such as calling back endangered species or keeping pests away from crops.

c. Challenges in AI-Based Animal Communication

  • Lack of Structured Grammar: Unlike human languages, animal communication lacks syntax and complex grammatical rules, making translation difficult.
  • Context-Dependence: Animal sounds vary in meaning based on social and environmental factors. AI needs extensive datasets to understand these nuances.
  • Ethical Concerns: Interacting with animals through AI raises concerns about unintended behavioral changes or stress on wildlife.

d. Future Prospects

AI-driven communication with animals could revolutionize fields such as:

  • Wildlife Conservation: AI could help track endangered species and prevent poaching by detecting distress signals.
  • Veterinary Science: AI-based vocal analysis might assist in diagnosing animal health issues.
  • Agriculture: AI systems could interpret livestock sounds to monitor well-being and optimize farming conditions.

Conclusion

The development of AI models for understanding and communicating with animals is an exciting frontier in science. While we are still far from a “universal translator” for animals, AI is already making progress in decoding the sounds and emotions of different species. Just as Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) was blessed with the ability to communicate with animals, modern AI may one day bring humans closer to unlocking the mysteries of animal languages.
